Values for Hollow Bodies

Projectname:
Microbiological standard values for hollow bodies made of glass and plastics

Workgroup: Preservation of food quality

Spokesman of IVLV-Project Team: N.N.
Research Institution: Fraunhofer IVV, Freising
Scientific Guidance: Dr. W. Hennlich

Financing: IVLV
Project Duration: 2006

In the light of increasing claims to the hygienic quality of food packaging within the total life cycle, the involved industry (manufacturers of packaging materials, packaging containers, filling plants and also food packers) will call more and more for distinct microbiological standard values. In order to fill this gap, an industrial working group will work out comprehensively microbiological standard values for hollow bodies made of glass and plastics. In a former IVLV project similar standard values were worked out for films, beakers and trays made of not absorbent materials.

The objectives of this project are:

  • Analysis and evaluation of the hygienic risks or hazards in respect to
    • manufacturing hollow bodies
    • filling processes of one-way and returnable packaging
    • closure processes
    • washing and disinfection of returnable containers
  • Workout of microbiological standard values
  • Development of the hygienic standards for packaging
  • Basic procedures for internal, external audits and certifications of production plants
  • Basis for evaluations of hygienic products and processes

The participants and co-workers of the project come from the food-, packaging industry as well as from food packers.
