Due to legal requirements and increased awareness of the circular economy, the use of recyclates in packaging will increase. The project aims to explore the behaviour of these materials during repeated recycling, in particular for PP, PE and PS, for which there is a lack of data to date. The mechanical, thermal, chemical and biological properties of the recyclates that have been processed several times are analysed in order to generate information on the material behaviour and potentially safety-relevant substances.
The project also includes the production and investigation of actual products from the recyclates. The objectives of the project include the coordination of multiple recycling trials on an industrial scale, the investigation of the properties of the recyclates, the creation of a database for degradation and reaction products in multiple recycling, and the identification of gaps and opportunities for action in multiple recycling and the use of recyclates. The project offers companies the opportunity to understand the behaviour of polyolefins and PS in multiple recycling, to explore application and processing possibilities and to exchange ideas with relevant players in the recycling and plastics processing industry.
Companies in Germany and Austria benefit from these results, as they can understand and improve their recycling processes and recyclate qualities better. The results can be used profitably by companies without carrying out their own cost-intensive research and development. Small and medium-sized enterprises in particular benefit from this.

The IGF project presented here by the Research Association of the Industrial Association for Food Technology and Packaging (IVLV e.V.) is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action as part of the program for the promotion of industrial community research (IGF) based on a decision of the German Bundestag.
