Project duration: 2000 – 2001

The aim of this project is to develop a test method for laminates using experimental tests in combination with theoretical migration models.

Contrary to the migration conditions required in conformity with the Directive 82/711/EEC, a kinetic study is necessary in the case of laminates in which the specific migration must be measured at least at two temperatures and after several different contact times in order to demonstrate the predictability of the migration behavior in the whole range of foreseeable conditions.

Due to the variety of compounds and combinations of materials in a multi-layer structure, a representative selection of laminates with the most important additives used in practice is necessary. Values of diffusion coefficients for selected additives in different layers and values of the partition coefficients of these additives between polymer and food simulant layers are measured. These values are used in the model software in order to check the compliance of predicted with measured values.
