Since 2006, the focus of international standardization is placed on ease of opening of consumer packages. Sweden filed an application with CEN/TC261 “Packaging”. A CEN standard should specify requirements for ease of opening of packages including a test method. Hereupon a European Working Group WG2 “Packaging – Ease of Opening“ was founded. In November 2007 a task force “Easy Handling of packages” as a German Mirrored Committee was founded in the DIN.
Fraunhofer AVV is intensive engaged in research activities focused on “Easy Opening” since 2005. The results of a research project were a standardized test procedure to determine peel and opening forces on heat-sealed and peelable packages and a reference value table “Easy to open”. The engagement of the project manager in the task force ensures that the research results will be implemented in standardization. Furthermore, it is possible to influence the content of the European standard on behalf of the IVLV members.
