Defined web tensions are necessary for a stable guiding of the packaging material web during the transportation. The web tensions are only regulated integral across the web. Stress profiles within the packaging material web can be caused by the specific characteristics of packaging material, machine and subassembly parameters and the process environment. The tendency goes increasingly to thinner packaging materials, the use of high-tech barrier layers, such as SiOx-layers and higher process speeds. Knowledge about the actual web stress and its profile in cross direction gains in significance. The analysis of the web tension profile is an important measure.

The aim of the project is to carry out measurement on defined stressed web shaped packaging materials to determinate the influences of different forming parts on tension profiles. On Order to this a testing device based on a non-contact method has been developed and built. The functionality has been proven in several trials. Furthermore at Fraunhofer AVV a complex test rig for machinability of flexible packaging materials was designed. After finishing manufacturing and installation work of the test rig in July, the web tension testing device will be implemented in it. Measurements will be carried out to investigate the real processing behaviour of web shaped packaging materials and to optimise processing machine parts.
