O2-Scavenging/Setting Up Test Centre

Projectname:
Setting up a Test Centre for "Oxygen-Scavenging Packaging"

Workgroup: Preservation of food quality

Manager of the project team: Dr. Cl. Müller, Wipak Walsrode
Research institution: Fraunhofer IVV, Freising
Scientific guidance: Dr. Kl. Rieblinger

Finanzierung: IVLV
Project duration: 2001 – 2002

Over the next few years, the conditions will be created in central Europe for wide market introduction of oxygen-scavenging packaging. This will involve packaging materials and packaging with designs modified for the European market and will require clarification of the benefits of oxygen-scavenging packaging for specific packaged goods and contents.

  • Manufacturers of packaging materials are searching for answers with regard to the design and optimisation of their materials. These must possess sufficiently broad universality. This also applies to packaging manufacturers, although their questions are considerably closer to the interests of filling companies.
  • Food manufacturers would like to determine the benefits of oxygen-scavenging packaging for their products. In order to carry this out, there must be the facility to test the relevant contents in combination with an active packaging.

It is planned to set up a Test Centre for "Oxygen-Scavenging Packaging" in the period from July 2001 to June 2002. This facility will be financed by project funds of the Industrievereinigung für Lebensmitteltechnologie und Verpackung e.V. (IVLV) and funds of the Fraunhofer IVV. The main objective is to set up test facilities to support the technology and marketing of oxygen-scavenging packaging.

IVLV and IVV will act as the initiators and operators of the planned test centre. In doing so they are pursuing their own individual objectives (attractiveness for members / candidates for membership, attractiveness as a contractor for R&D services) and considerable synergy-effects are envisaged. The Test Centre for "Oxygen-Scavenging Packaging" will cover three areas of work:

  1. Equipment for measuring the property profiles of oxygen-scavenging polymeric packaging materials ("Material testing unit")
  2. Test unit for investigating the effects of oxygen-scavenging on special contents in instrumented model packaging ("Application testing unit")
  3. Filling unit(s) for real oxygen-scavenging packaging ("Filling station")
