Tightness of Pouches

Projectname:
Development of scientifically based and practicable Methods to evaluate the Tightness of Pouches

Workgroup: Filling and packaging processes

Spokesman of IVLV-Project Team: Hr. Junghöfer/Bischof + Klein
Research Institution: Fraunhofer AVV, Dresden
Scientific Guidance: Hr. M. Mauermann/Prof. Dr.-Ing. H. Goldhahn

IGF: 13565BR
Financing: BMWi
Project Duration: 2003 – 2005

e tightness of a packaging sealing is an essential demand to ensure its function. Requirements on the packaging tightness depend on the packaging goods properties and the process conditions. To reduce the loss of packaging material and packaging goods due to untight sealings specific knowledge about the tightness of packages, typical packaging goods demands and classified testing methods is necessary.

It is the aim of the project to define methods to characterise the tightness of packaging sealings. Furthermore a tightness classification related to the packaging goods and a practical test regime will be developed.

Procedure:

  • Gas Permeation Kinetics analysis of the tightness of pouches
  • Bubble Test analysis of the tightness of pouches
  • Penetration analysis of the tightness of pouches
  • Comparison of test methods and determination of parameters to compare the test results
  • Determination of packaging good properties relevant to the different tightness classes

As a result of these analyses certain characteristic packaging goods are going to be allocated to tightness classes and test methods.

Following points will be investigated in 2005:

  • Analysis for application areas of different tightness test methods
  • Comparison of the test methods
  • Proposal of tightness classifications and allocation of test methods
  • Proposal of a generally leak check of pouches
