O2-Scavenging/Testcentre Active Pack.

Projectname:
Extension of Test Centre “oxygen-scavenging Packaging”

Workgroup: Preservation of food quality

Spokesman of IVLV-Project team: N.N.
Research institution:Fraunhofer IVV, Freising
Scientific guidance: Dr. Kl. Rieblinger

Financing: IVLV/FhIVV
Project duration: 2001 – 2003

In the period July 2001 until September 2002 a test centre "oxygen-scavenging Packaging” was developed. This institution was financed by the “Industrial Organisation for Food Technology and Packaging e. V.” (IVLV) and own resources of Fraunhofer IVV. The IVV and IVLV had two intentions:

  • Creation of test equipments to the support of technology and marketing for oxygen-living packing. O2-scavenging packaging is predicted good market chances because of their broad scope; it is at the same time the pilot technology for the new generation of the active packing.
  • Creation of a communication centre for the new technology in the surrounding field of "presentable, useful mechanisms".

The objective of this follow-up project is the development and validation of further precise and inline methods for the measurement of foil functions (here oxygen scavenging) by highly soluble gravimetry (water vapour sorption isotherms DVS 1000, Porotec company) and by online oxygen measurement via fluorescence method (SentrOxy® Spec, company Sentronic). Both measuring instruments are available at IVV and could also apply for further foil functions (dampness adjustment, oxygen indicator).
