Foam Cleaning

Projectname:
Foam Cleaning

Workgroup: Hygienic production

Scientific Partners and Guidance:
Fraunhofer IVV Dresden, Mr. E. Fuchs

Financing: IVLV
Duration: 2014

Foam cleaning is mainly used for exterior cleaning of machinery and equipment. The benefits are increased operator protection due to reducing formation of aerosols and the visibility of the wetted area. The resource savings are less important.

To facilitate the use of foam also in closed cleaning systems (such as in a tank), it is necessary to determine the usefulness of foam cleaning in comparison to the effort. In a first step a reproducible method for foam generation in a test rig is designed. Cleaning studies are planned using a liquid falling film on a vertical stainless steel sample.

The experiments are carried out with foam and using a liquid chemical cleaning fluid. The aim of the experiments is to demonstrate:

  • Significant reduction in the use of resources by foam cleaning
  • Reduction of cleaning time

Furthermore, the following questions will be investigated within the project:

  • Is foam cleaning also suitable for tank cleaning?
  • What foam expansion is suitable for cleaning (compromise between adhesion and rinseability)?
  • What surface adhesion is desirable?
  • What is the best contact time of the foam?
