The BLITZ research project is conducting a fundamental investigation into the suitability of the xenon flash process for sterilising packaging materials in aseptic food filling plants. First, the sterilisation performance against resistant endospores is being analysed, including the correlation between apathogenic test organisms and relevant target germs such as Clostridium botulinum. In addition, potential influencing factors such as shadow effects, material properties and complex packaging geometries are systematically evaluated in order to identify technical limitations and optimisation potential.
The investigations are based on standardised microbiological challenge tests and practical test series with various industrial xenon flash systems. Industry partners are supporting the project with loaned equipment and many years of practical experience in the field of aseptic filling technology and flash technology. With its comprehensive expertise in microbiological validation and the development of sterilisation processes, the Fraunhofer IVV is making a significant contribution to the scientifically sound evaluation of the technology.
The project provides reliable findings on the effectiveness and industrial applicability of xenon flash light in demanding hygienic applications. The results are intended to provide a sound basis for decision-making on the future integration of the pulsed light process into aseptic filling processes.

The IGF project presented here by the Research Association of the Industrial Association for Food Technology and Packaging (IVLV e.V.) is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy as part of the program for the promotion of industrial community research (IGF) based on a decision of the German Bundestag.
